Begging banned in Baghdad
Beggars will be cleared from the streets of Baghdad in a new Government clampdown. Since the US-led invasion in 2003, the number of street beggars has increased considerably. Many of them are children.
However, the Iraqi government is not willing to tolerate this anymore. Beggars will now be arrested. The elderly beggars will be sent to old-age homes whilst the child beggars will be sent to orphanages or youth prisons.
Begging is seen as both anti-social and a security risk because insurgents are increasingly using the homeless to perpetrate suicide bombings.
