University limits freedom of expression
A court has ruled against Tel Aviv University's decision to close an interenational art exhibition. Students were angry when the University closed their exhibition which, through 25 paintings, detailed the torture and repression of the Falun Gong spiritual movement by the Chinese Government.
Falun Gong has been outlawed in China since 1999. Devotees are often imprisoned and tortured for their beliefs. It is thought that TAU succumbed to pressure from the Chinese Embassy, which funds a lot of University activity.
Students have taken the University to court and the ruling went in their favour. The judge said that TAU had violated their freedom of expression. The exhibition is to be re-instated, the students have been awared NIS 45,000 and court costs.
