King Abdullah has made a sweeping reform of the Saudi education system by introducing mixed classes into a co-ed university. The King Abdullah Science and Technology University opened recently and has been referred to as a "beacon of tolerance".
As well as the most up-to-date equipment, the University also boasts the 14th fastest supercomputer in the world. It is understood to mark a move away from Saudi Arabia's reliance on oil and a proactive move into the scientific community. 800 students have enrolled to date, with an estimate of 2,000 within the next decade.
Whilst the University has been widely welcomed, some have opposed it, suggesting that co-education is a sin because it inflames the senses and leads to evil practices.
